AI Image Models vs Apps
An AI image model is the system that draws; an AI image app is the product you buy, log into, and prompt. Nano Banana Pro is a model inside Google Gemini; GPT Image 2 is the model inside ChatGPT. Confusing the two layers is the main reason "best AI image generator" results contradict one another.
Why this page exists
In our October 2026 sampling of "best AI image generator" sources, leading publications picked different winners at different layers: CNET's top score went to a model (Nano Banana 2, 8.5), tech-insider.org's overall pick was also a model (GPT Image 2), and Zapier's survey ranked consumer products. None of those is wrong — they are answering different questions. Our main ranking answers the product question; this page separates the layers so the answers stop colliding.
The stack, in three layers
| layer | what it is | examples on record |
|---|---|---|
| model | the system that generates pixels | Nano Banana (Google DeepMind's image line, listed by Google alongside Gemini, Veo, Imagen), GPT Image 2 (OpenAI), FLUX (Black Forest Labs), Stable Diffusion (Stability AI) |
| app / product | what you buy, log into, prompt | ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Midjourney, Adobe Firefly, Canva |
| provider / API | serves models to code, billed per image | see our provider-layer page |
These attributions come from each vendor's own materials and published surveys as captured in our fact base (October 2026).
Apps can share parents too
The layer confusion has a second face: two apps can belong to one company. Canva's recorded subsidiaries include Leonardo.ai (Wikipedia, accessed October 2026), so a Canva-vs-Leonardo comparison is intra-group, not independent-versus-independent. We disclose group ownership wherever it touches our rankings.
What changes between the layers
- Models are compared on output quality (public Elo leaderboards), price per 1,000 images, and latency.
- Apps are compared on free-tier terms, editing tools, privacy policies, and workflow — the fields our main ranking and method use.
- Providers are compared on API price, latency, and model lineup — details here.
FAQ
Is Nano Banana an app?
No. Nano Banana is Google DeepMind's image model line — Google's own product list places it alongside Gemini, Veo and Imagen. You use it inside Google Gemini (and through an API), not as a standalone app.
Is GPT Image 2 the same as ChatGPT?
No. GPT Image 2 is the image model; ChatGPT is the product that wraps it. When our main ranking names ChatGPT Image 2, it is ranking OpenAI's image generation as delivered in the ChatGPT product.
Why does the model-vs-app distinction matter for a "best of" list?
Because sources mix the layers. In our October 2026 sampling, four leading sources named four different winners — some named a model (Nano Banana Pro, GPT Image 2), others named a product (ChatGPT). A list that does not say which layer it ranks cannot be compared with one that ranks the other.
The other senses of the phrase: our product ranking and our API providers page.
