AI Image API Providers

The third sense of "AI image generator" is the provider layer: services that expose image models through an API, billed per image or per 1,000 generations. One public leaderboard tracks 169 text-to-image models across 26 providers — a market as large as the consumer one, and almost never what "best AI image generator" articles actually rank.

Why this page exists

People arriving from search hold three different things in mind: the product they would buy, the model that draws, and the API they would call from code. Our 2026 run answers the product question only. This page keeps the third sense from polluting it — and records what a provider ranking will measure when we run one.

What a provider is evaluated on

These are evaluation criteria, not claims about any specific provider — we have not verified providers against them yet.

How this layer feeds our method

Two of our six dimensions — cost per 1,000 images (20%) and generation speed (10%) — are defined to consume exactly these provider-layer fields from a public source, so that when our Elo capture pass completes, the same numbers can be recomputed by anyone. That is the point of anchoring to a published leaderboard instead of self-reported marketing figures.

FAQ

Do you rank API providers?

Not yet. The 2026 run covers consumer products; provider-level fields — price per 1,000 images, latency, model lineup — are scheduled as a separate run under the same public method. Until then this page disambiguates rather than ranks.

Is an API provider a model?

No — the same layer distinction applies: the model draws, the provider bills and serves it. One model can be reachable through many providers and apps; FLUX, for example, is recorded as accessible through several third-party platforms as well as an API and local self-hosting.

The other senses of the phrase: our product ranking and our models-vs-apps page.
