Free AI Image Generators: What Each Free Tier Actually Allows (2026)
Free AI image generator tiers: limits for ChatGPT, Nano Banana, Midjourney, Reve, Ideogram, Recraft and Firefly, and the next paid step. Source: Zapier https://zapier.com/blog/best-ai-image-generator/
If you only need a few images a month, start with the free plan that matches your task, not the one with the largest headline. Zapier’s free-plan listing describes limited free access for ChatGPT and Nano Banana, a 10-credits-a-week plan for Ideogram, and 30 credits a day for Recraft. Free tiers change often, so the figures below were checked on 2026-10-14, and the official pages govern.
Three criteria that matter
- Allowance type. Some free plans count credits, some count generations, and some only offer limited features. The unit decides how many images you actually get.
- Waiting and features. Zapier notes that Ideogram’s free plan makes you wait a few minutes before a generation starts, and gives only basic features.
- Paid step-up. Each free plan is a trial of a paid product, so the cheapest paid tier is the next number to check.
The free tiers, one by one
Every row comes from Zapier’s listing of plans, checked 2026-10-14.
| tool | free access (per Zapier) | cheapest paid step (per Zapier) |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Limited image access on the free plan | ChatGPT Go at $8 per month |
| Nano Banana (Gemini) | Limited availability on the free plan | Google AI Plus at $4.99 per month |
| Midjourney | Free trials currently suspended | Basic Plan from $10 per month, about 200 images |
| Reve | Limited free plan, which Zapier calls solid | Lite at $7.99 per month, 5x images |
| Ideogram | 10 credits a week, slow starts, basic features | Plus at $20 per month, or $15 billed annually |
| Recraft | 30 credits a day, limited features | Basic from $12 per month, 1,000 credits |
| Adobe Firefly | Limited free credits | Firefly Standard from $9.99 for 2,000 credits |
Which free plan fits which job
Recraft’s free plan gives the most daily room, at 30 credits per day. Zapier describes Recraft’s graphic design features as second to none, and says its images can be exported as JPGs, PNGs or SVGs. The free plan suits design mock-ups that you will refine later, though Zapier also calls Recraft more complicated than some of the other apps.
Reve’s free plan suits prompt testing. Zapier calls its prompt adherence best-in-class, and a limited free plan lets you check that claim with your own prompts before you pay.
For a one-off social image, Ideogram’s 10 credits a week may be enough, but the wait before each generation and the public-by-default setting are the costs.
Trade-offs
- Visibility. Zapier lists Midjourney and Ideogram images as public by default. A free account that publishes everything to a public gallery may not suit client work.
- Commercial use. Zapier records commercial usage rights on Midjourney’s paid plan. It does not make the same claim for every free plan, so read the terms.
- Limits change. Zapier notes that Midjourney’s free trials are occasionally reinstated for a few days. A trial that opens and closes is a poor basis for a plan.
Checklist before you sign up
- Decide how many images you need per week, then match that number to the unit: credits, generations or features.
- Check the official pricing page for the current free allowance. Figures here were checked 2026-10-14.
- Check the visibility setting in your account before you upload a client brief.
- Save each platform’s current terms, since commercial rights depend on them.
Gaps in this guide
It cannot say which free plan produces the best image, because the source scores quality on the apps as a whole and does not publish a free-tier test. It does not convert every free allowance into one unit, since the sources describe limits in different ways. It does not give legal advice on commercial use.
FAQ
Which AI image generator has the best free plan?
No single winner exists, because the free plans limit different things. Zapier records ChatGPT's free image access as limited, Recraft's free plan at 30 credits per day with limited features, and Ideogram's at 10 credits a week with a wait before each generation. The right choice depends on whether you need daily credits, weekly credits or a generation count. Source: https://zapier.com/blog/best-ai-image-generator/
Is Midjourney free to try?
Not at the moment. Zapier records that Midjourney's free trials are currently suspended, and that its Basic Plan starts at $10 per month for about 200 images with commercial usage rights. Source: https://zapier.com/blog/best-ai-image-generator/
Do free plans let me use images commercially?
This guide does not make that call. Zapier records commercial usage rights for Midjourney's paid plan. For the other products, check each platform's terms, because the source does not give a uniform answer for free accounts. Source: https://zapier.com/blog/best-ai-image-generator/
